CIEH Principles of Manual Handling

Course outline

This Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH) course is a stand alone Level 1 qualification which complements the CIEH Heath and Safety programme. It is aimed at those who carry out manual handling activities at work and introduces candidates to the hazards of manual handling, the risks involved and the controls available and what to expect from a manual handling assessment. Continuous assessment will be conducted by the trainer during the course and candidates who successfully complete a multi-choice assessment will be awarded the CIEH certificate.

Who should attend?

  • Employees who carry out any pulling, lifting, moving or other manual handling activities at work
  • Anyone who wishes to gain a formal qualification (Level 1) in Manual Handling

Aims

The aims of the course are to ensure that candidates are aware of their legal obligations in respect of the Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992 and to enable them to identify potential hazardous areas and causes of accidents which can promote unsafe conditions.

Objectives

At the end of the course, candidates will be able to:

  • contribute to the development of safer methods and tasks, in co-operation with their managers and supervisors;
  • define the legal obligations of employers and employees with regard to the Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992;
  • establish the causes of accidents and ill health in respect to manual handling activities;
  • discuss methods of preventing accidents and ill health and suggest safe and correct methods of manual handling;
  • establish and discuss the need to use handling aids where possible to reduce the risk of injury.
